About This Project

JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY LECTURE THEATRE

The new Lecture Theatre at James Cook University (JCU) accommodates up to 120 students and responds to the client’s desire to create a technology enriched interactive learning space, within the building and the surrounding landscape.

The positioning of the building provides a direct extension to an existing theatre complex and enhances the public external space by creating an outdoor foyer off the walkway opening out to the newly created Founder’s Green landscaped garden.  An open foyer creates new opportunities for students to interact in an informal setting and contains a signage portal, niche seating and access to power and data usage.

Transparent materials and metal screening are integrated into the existing theatre façade creating a clean, modern connection between the new and existing theatres. Earth coloured tilt-up panels reflect the red soil of the JCU campus and anchor the building in its context.

Alanna Coburn was the Project Leader for the design, documentation and construction phase services for this project whilst working for dwp|suters.
