The redevelopment of The Star of the Sea Elder’s Village provides a much needed update of the facility as well as addressing particular cultural requirements of the residents.
Alterations and additions were completed to the existing hostel and Nursing Home buildings to create a new 40 bed Residential Aged Care Facility enabling ageing in place and more efficient staffing. A central kitchen and dining room create a communal focus for the building and provides views to connect residents to the sea, (which is an integral part of the Torres Strait Islander culture). Accommodation for residents is provided in two wings off the central services area. All rooms were refurbished to enable a higher level of care. Some double/triple rooms were included to enable family members to share rooms and to provide larger ensuites for bariatric residents. These rooms are designed to allow for conversion to single rooms if needed in future.
The project also includes new staff accommodation to assist with staff retention and management.
