The Bluewater forms the “hub” of a new residential precinct in the Cairns Northern Beaches suburbs. The venue includes a restaurant and function centre, with a spacious deck overlooking the marina. A bottle shop and deli/coffee shop provide convenience foods and a casual meeting place for the local community. In addition to this, there are facilities for boat owners who live at the Marina.
Architecturally, The Bluewater takes its cue from the waterfront aspect. The angular form reflects the shapes of boat hulls and sails. The long gable roof, exposed steel and raw finishes are typical of wharf sheds and give the building a sea-worthy character. Natural materials and lighting create a warm, friendly but sophisticated atmosphere. Timber has been used extensively in the fit-out, with African Mahogany sourced from a hazardous tree at the owners’ previous establishment in Kununurra.
The building is carefully oriented with extensive glazing used to maximise the views to the inlet and surrounding mountains. The building opens up to the North Easterly breezes and marina, with service areas positioned to block unsavoury weather and provide separation to neighbouring residential properties. Double glazing and absorptive materials were used to meet stringent acoustic requirements.
