The Atherton Community Education, Training and Disaster Coordination Centre is a multi-functional facility providing a site where community members, groups and government agencies can conduct regular training and education sessions, primarily focused on natural disaster resilience and preparation, as well as being used as the Local Disaster Coordination Centre.
Based on the nature of the facility and the activities performed, the building form presents a robust and strong yet dynamic structure, which is grounded and durable and engages with its street frontage for users accessing the facility. Internally, flexible furniture arrangements were paramount in opening the services up to diverse user groups and events.
Designed to withstand category 5 cyclones, a metal screening enveloping the main building structure offers protection to openings and patios, securing the facility.
